CBD is everywhere these days. It’s not just tinctures or CBD vaping, but in cocktails, chocolates, even skin care. CBD certainly isn’t new, but these days, it’s all over the news. What’s the deal with the hype, and is all the excitement over CBD warranted?
What is CBD?
Though popular, CBD isn’t necessarily fully understood by all. CBD is cannabidiol, one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. THC is another cannabinoid, but unlike THC, CBD won’t get you high. CBD typically comes from hemp, which contains only trace amounts of THC and has a higher concentration of CBD. CBD oil and other CBD products are typically used for their therapeutic properties.
As more states in the U.S. legalize marijuana for medicinal or recreational use, more people become aware of what cannabis can do beyond just getting you high. And while some people prefer to use marijuana, with THC, others want the health benefits without the euphoria. That’s what CBD offers.
People who wouldn’t dream of lighting up a joint are turning to CBD to relieve a variety of conditions, including anxiety, insomnia, pain, acne, and inflammation. And it’s available in an endless array of user friendly forms. While CBD oil, vapes, and other more traditional means of CBD use are still available, the market is flooded with other options, such as CBD ice cream, beauty products, bath bombs, even dog treats.
CBD’s notable absence of euphoria is perhaps its largest appeal. For some, CBD can offer support for the day, relieving anxiety and pain, or even acting as a social lubricant. But unlike marijuana or alcohol, even rookie users of CBD can drive, go to work, spend time with their kids, and wake up on time the next morning without any kind of drag. A user who wouldn’t be functional on marijuana can have a completely normal day — albeit with a boost — while using CBD.
Does CBD Live up to the Hype?
There’s no shortage of promises and excitement for CBD, but is it warranted? Overall, yes. While you may come across some wild claims, CBD does seem to offer legitimate benefits. Research is limited, but growing, and what research does exist is typically positive in supporting the idea that CBD can offer relief for a variety of conditions.
Some of the conditions CBD can treat include:
- Chronic pain
- Arthritis and inflammation
- Anxiety, depression, and PTSD
- Nausea and inflammatory bowel disease
- Epilepsy and seizures
CBD can also be helpful for sleep and anxiety. Research from Kaiser Permanente, found that CBD is helpful for both insomnia and anxiety. Within the first month of use, most patients in the study taking CBD experienced improved anxiety and sleep outcomes. And almost all of the patients tolerated CBD well.
A major part of CBD’s appeal is its low risk. According to the World Health Organization, CBD has little to no risk of addiction or dependency. And overall, CBD oil is well tolerated by users, so side effects are rare.
Should you try CBD for yourself? If you’re looking for relief from chronic conditions, it’s worth a shot. With a low risk, you can try out CBD to see if it works well for you without concern of major side effects or addiction.
